Dr David Patterson co-founder and CEO
Prior to founding SOPHIA Search, David was the Director of the Northern Ireland Knowledge Engineering Laboratory (NIKEL) at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland. NIKEL is an artificial intelligence research and technology transfer centre which largely focused on data mining, machine learning and information retrieval. It was here that the initial research behind SOPHIA was carried out.
David oversees the day to day running of the company including operations, finances, contracts and product development.
Dr Vladimir Dobrynin co-founder and CTO
Prior to founding SOPHIA Search, Vladimir was an Associate Professor and senior researcher at St. Petersburg State University. He graduated in 1977 with honours and worked for 3 years as an engineer in the Radio-Technical Research Institute in St. Petersburg. In 1981 he took up a position at St. Petersburg State University and received his Ph.D. in Mathematical Cybernetics in 1985. He has been working in the IT sector for almost 30 years during which time he has gathered a wealth of experience.
Vladimir manages research activities, software development and quality assurance at SOPHIA.

Tim Brundle Director
Tim Brundle is the Director of Innovation at the University of Ulster and is responsible for the university’s commercial output. His role comprises the commercialisation of the outcomes of Ulster’s research, responsibility for the University’s interaction with businesses and the transfer of the university’s knowledge and technology into both the public and private sectors. Tim is also a Non-Executive Director of a number of Ulster’s spin out companies and an Executive Director of the University’s technology venturing company, UUTech Ltd..
Tim has nine years experience in the commercialisation of technology and business & economic development. His background in the UK Ministry of Defence, QinetiQ ltd, the Centre for Competitiveness, the Northern Ireland Aerospace Consortium and National Air Traffic Services is complemented by recent success in the management of public to private sector transition and change management. Tim also has experience raising project & new venture funds, scenario planning, developing technology commercialisation & innovation strategies and authoring public sector reports.
Tim holds a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Biotechnology from the University of Glamorgan and both a Master of Medical Science Degree and an Executive MBA from Queen’s University of Belfast
